this blog started out as a side journal / log of events, projects, and personal poems that initially reflected what I was involved with while working a job and coming back to some semblance of 'home' with a creative home base of friends, in various places over time. Hey yous all, MUSIC is bursting at the seams... Last week saw a Pentecost celebration of epic proportions in Brooklyn. Medieval Aoi has few more gigs lined up before Clem and Charlotte set sail for Europe, then we are recording upon touchdown in August, whoa.

James Christy and his Touch Tunnel are also gearing up for a Summer into Fall tour as well.

And in late July, Trevor has organized a shocking of the eye-lid eve at Tumulty's in New Brunswick (see info below) with the lovely MV EE. The mid-east coast never stops rocking.

King Darves (De stijl Records)
"So i would imagine that youd have one look at the photo of King Darves we have here and think "Oh brother! Another guy with a beard getting over what looks like a bad case of the clap and an acoustic guitar. Wheres my axe?" so were not gonna put it up here. (Mystique, dig?) But its really not like that, i tell you! The bedrock of King Darves New Brunswick based concoction is certainly folk based but theres no headband and hes not singing of pixies in the moss. This is somewhere between rolled cigs and the foggy vision of Big Pink from somewhere on Jersey Avenue, or maybe a one-manned Meat Puppets. This kid has really cobbled something together in his kitchen sink! ...the prettiest sound of his deep, rich voice will make you tap yr toes and nod yr head like a little Jersey Goil." - Tony Rettman.

Kohoutek (Prophase Records)
"People interested in music that defies the pop song convention, music that challenges that part of your brain that lies dormant during most aural experiences, need a band like Washington DC’s Kohoutek. This quintet began their wildly meandering journey across the more peripheral realms of free-form psych rock a few years back and from the very beginning they seemed determined to try to cross swathes of interstellar drone, guitar squall and loose, slowly evolving improvisations of drum and bass grooves and squelchy electronics with tapestries of gravitationally flowing darkness. What we get is a sonic bag that is raw, gorgeous, loud, dreamy, dissonant and mystical at the same time, somehow managing to transcend all sorts of seemingly limited genre barriers. Dedicated followers of bands such as the Spacious Mind, SubArachnoid Space and Ash Ra Tempel will for sure want to check these cats out, with a musical style that at its best rarely goes wrong in the live setting." -Mats Gustafsson

Pots & Powercells (dihd/Log Cabin Recordings)
It's hard to say whether Pots & Powercells rose out of the ashes of the dispersed members of experimental street performing act, Buckets & Batteries, or if they're merely in the same mindset; 'space adaptive music' making. Powercells started in the fall of 2009 and has played under a local NJ transit bridge with Finnish sound artist, Kuupuu and performed a set at Avant Fairfax Festival 2010 in Fairfax, VA. Powercells also has released a handful of homespun cassettes and cd-rs.
Members of the Human Adult Band, Mike Bruno and the Black Magic Family Band, Pact of Wolves, The Yets, and several other one-off New Brunswick projects regularly jam with the band, and the rotating cast of characters means you're unlikely to seem the same style jam twice.

I think science fiction does help, and it points in very interesting directions. It points in relativistic directions. It says that we have the imagination for these other opportunities, these other choices. We tend to tie ourselves down to limited choices. We say, "Well, the only answer is...." or, "If you would just. . . ." Whatever follows these two statements narrows the choices right there. It gets the vision right down close to the ground so that you don't see anything happening outside. Humans tend not to see over a long range. Now we are required, in these generations, to have a longer range view of what we inflict on the world around us. This is where, I think, science fiction is helping. I don't think that the mere writing of such a book as Brave New World or 1984 prevents those things which are portrayed in those books from happening. But I do think they alert us to that possibility and make that possibility less likely. They make us aware that we may be going in that direction.

Jessie just rolled through town, handing out a recent EP of his solo act 'People Skills'. He's been riding all over the east coast this year and the supposed mindset makes for tracks full of instrumental mantra, calm, noise, space, then back into melody; backed with beats sometimes, falling apart at other points. Driving around the city for work, I can't help but feel the music compliments my searching through the traffic, garbage, smoke, and hulking monsters of buildings. Apparently all the instruments and most of the technology used to record the work was found or given to the lad. If either one of us was more networkable I would direct you to his stuff, or where to find it. For now, you'll just have to see this fellow in the flesh, most probably in Philadelphia.

AOI continues to learn new songs. Someone mentioned to me the other day that we should try to write a grant for our music, as some medieval historical society might approve of what we are doing. Its food for thought. But the holiday season gives way to hiatus anyway. Some friends from Holland will be bombarding soon, hardcore punk rockers for sure. In the meantime, a new best friend in life is encouraging me to quit my job, and focus on the art, and get some sleep. I have been trying to make that work for a while now, but it sure warms the soul to get that sort of encouragement. Enjoy the new year.

What are you doing, by the way, all by yourself, entertaining me and the rest of the world perhaps? Oh your mom is walking the dog behind me, and I don't even know you. But you are making fun of the older woman who is asking me how to get to Broadway, when its in clear sight less then a block away. "Excuse meee? Do you know where..."

...you mimic her scratchy voice, look at me and crack a smile, then duck into your expensive (or inexpensive) huge rimmed, purple clothed Yankees hat. Whispering to the dog, then doing splits and jumps all over the crowded sidewalk full of business people that are coming or going to the happiest of hours. I look back and your mom has the most calmly embarrassed yet contently understanding faces I have seen in a while. The sun sets early on this street.

We had the joy recently of experiencing these guys from across the pacific. I was sure glad to have the capabilities to record 'em. They invited us over to hang out 'sometime' - it was a pretty moving get together, I must say! Cheers Katz, and other guys who's name I can't remember. Makes me glad to keep making strange music and sharing it around the globe.

Also, just finished reading Ann Hansen's DIRECT ACTION. What a story this proactive lady and her friends have, wreaking havoc on corporate Canada. It goes to the pile of inspiring reads from the summer which include Derrick Jensen's earth first nerd-out in the ENDGAME series, Urban Scout's REWILD OR DIE, and a lovely zine by the Spore Liberation Front, RADICAL MYCOLOGY. I'm ready for some pulp romance at this point.

One of the last things that I will ever think of before I die is: thank god for Derek Ligget. He's one of the founding members of the HUMAN ADULT BAND / HUMAN ADULTS and the guitarist for F___IN' PISSED currently, and this guy is still punk rock as f___. And I guess I don't even mean punk 'rawk'; I am saying he is also a bit metal as f___ perhaps. And he's a super nice guy ontop of all the musical enthusiasms - for several days he has hosted us in his home, as we are back in Amsterdam, drinking great beer, rocking the various LP's and others music; making the band (us) Hollander crepes or pancakes or what-have-you, and we are hiking all over the f___ing place with him. Aside from the other awesome town(s) and people we have visited and vacationed with whilst on the Netherlander excursion, this guy really makes us feel at home, very much. AND, on top of all this we got rigged with one of the best last-minute shows I have ever played. Seriously.

An old firehouse and, what appeared to be, a bank got squatted yesterday amidst a citywide 'squatters rights' bombard on the outskirts of Amsterdam. At this point in the trip, we americanos were pretty used to the european squatter's humble generosities of well cooked food, good conversation, couches, beds, friendly dogs, clean floors, etc, etc - I'd trade cheese with them ontop of the donations we more than over-paid for their kindness. I mean, how friggin' nice of them? For real. It was all there, a festival in an abandoned building. The event needed some live music and we had been invited earlier in the week to play with F___IN' PISSED with Han on drums (also, my husband to be?). However, in the beginning of the day we had no idea where the f___ this place was. It was only through coming across various other squatter's that we picked up on a place, an 'old firehouse' they called it, that was having live bands, maybe one from america? Oh yeah. As soon as we got there we were treated like royalty, to my standards . Really friendly gals and guys; "Andria would you marry me? Oh wait, this is your boyfriend? Can I marry him too so you can come to america? Oh shit, I have to get a divorce from Han?"

And as soon as we started a rocking, the police came a knocking - but we played probably twenty minutes of the best shit I have ever done with these brother New Englanders, Josh and Tahler, the whole time we've been banging it out. I felt pretty bad about closing down the eve with our lousy noise, but then again it was a rare experience to perform for such a great group of people, in a rattling skeleton of of a living space.

Thank you for the smiles Han and Derek, friendly anarchist ladies, and love-lorn dogs. Oh and the potatoes and beer, I think that saved me too. It was really loud and great to hang out.

(Don't worry, its not my actual toes...) Been training for a two-day long relay race in late august, and this always seems to happen every now and then. I haven't been using the proper fitting shoes in the past? Ontop of that I sprinted around barefoot this past weekend and ended up with some more bloody toes, now apparently infected, according to my recently married little sister (wooo!). Resting now, and french couch surfers sliding through our living room and commenting on our american alcoholic ways... the summer carries on.

This one is taken from local scrap-into-gold-ers Brooklyn Fire Proof's photo collection, of their massive vegetable and flower milk crate collection atop the roof.

I look forward to a weekend of cleaning and grading the backyard of my sister and Matt's new home. My mom says they found a bunch of garbage piles and drug paraphernalia on the grounds of this old fixer-upper. Should be a good time digging for 'ze independence day weekend. Life in the sun is swell.

Applying to some new opportunities, taking a break from the usual - though creative events are still pulsing - I can't really expect what the days are gonna be like presently, which is good I think. Hope yer well.

I will always appreciate somebody proverbially (or actually) slapping some sense into me, especially when my outlook sways into the 'doomed'. Recently, the pile of books in my room have come to include Derrick Jensen's 'Endgame: Volume I, The Problem of Civilization', Jared Diamond's 'Collapse', and C.S. Lewis' 'The Great Divorce'. Its been making for some arduous reading, enlightening in some regards, but specifically 'Endgame' has been dragging at the core of my more positive being, thinking about the future of being human. Yes, civilization is destroying the earth. And I am killing myself with tainted and perverted food, drink and technologies ferried to me from profit hungry corporations that exploit animals, earth and media. We should all be aware of the preciousness around us - and the waste and greed that juxtaposes this. People are being 'forced' to be holing up in cities and sucking resources from around the globe. But it doesn't have to be so depressing. Yes, I'd like to live closer with the land someday; but for now we can inspire each other and help each other out, try to live simply, right? I want to be able to trade honey and eggplants with the potential raw cheese maker/programmer down the road, of course! We feed off each other, but its not always abusive. We can try our damnedest to undermine those in power, but it may just take a disaster (either man made or natural) to change things. Life sucks if you worry about this future so much - And I am even starting to write like the guy now. Jeeze.

In Jensen's vein, but thinking of solutions... I admit I tried to interpret the recent BP/USA Oil-F-Up with a visual reaction of those resource guzzling technologies we all depend on, sketched up and conceptualized as recycled in a world where there is no use for them anymore (I felt like I was in high school again, thinking I knew what was what) ; airplanes upside down, half submerged with masts and booms a fixed to the wheel slots, as docile small sailing communities, schools of fish swimming by the passenger windows, the planes tied to oil & shipping rigs converted into floating, anchored living quarters, with recreation areas above deck. On land, car doors and other sheets stripped from them, providing the backing for levees and other structures, wal-marts converted into living spaces or places to beat the heat. When all was said and done, I looked at the drawing the next day not too pleased, and decided to scrap it as I normally do with stuff that I wouldn't want to see anyway. Its kind of obvious that we will find ways to re-use what can't be used in a new time. We can all choose to be dreamers or just focus on whats going in front of us, for real.

Now the run down, with links, to follow whats going on with fun shtuff in my life, if you so care. I don't update this thing too often, and when I do its usually out of some sort of anxiety to feel overly productive outside of the mundane and routine of work and life. 'Why worry?' I must ask myself again...

As of this summer, AOI is anticipating some 'busking' to occur at a few renaissance festivals, along with our native basement callings.

Visiting James Christy in Philadelphia to collaborate on some new ideas with Yets, soon. Maybe completing more recordings and perhaps making a split with earlier documented Pots & Powercells jams from Caitlin's living room - an anticipated CDr titled 'Hungry Ghosts' to be released as soon as possible. Taking my time, guys! Long live Fart Rock!

Also, power-party-instrumental band and would-be-considered-a-Load-Records-rip-off project, Aram Fingal, has been offered a few gigs in the Netherlands for September - high-school buddy Josh and I are enlisting Tahler for drums as Steve Viegas is getting too old to play drums, casio and occasionally sing at the same time. I'm psyched to finish up some prints for the flyer artwork.

and... Thanks for prescribing cold showers Noah & goya coconut water, these runs in the heat are taking it out of me!

My bike climbs the early morning hill, the fences blacken the sun out, and at the top there's a cemetery on both sides. It seems that all the ride is leading up to this point, even though its only in the middle of the commute. On the way back, the wind shoves dust into my eyes, the trucks roar, and the pot holes depress more every day - its a sensory overload more enjoyable than it sounds. Apparently everybody's also been rushing home after work, looking fondly to the end of the day.

When I get back, I spot the old man squatting at his garden. I ask him about sharing the backyard. Yo quiero plantas y vegetales aqui. My spanish sucks. His name is George? Arturo? Cool y Gracias. He smiles at the gringo, and motions to a spot beyond the garbage and weeping mulberry. Once scraped through and cleaned up, the soil ain't too shabby - a good home for some rosemary, onions, eggplant and pumpkins, to start and catch up with Arturo's tomatoes, beans and herbs. Its doubtful most guests won't eat this food if they saw where it came from though. I am thankful to leave the majority of the calories to be cultivated by the pros.

I am growing weary here as the weather warms up; its quite a perennial happening for me though. Friends are leaving the city, getting laid off, getting laid, starting new paths and I see myself finding solace in the Internet and documentation, totally not where i want to be in my head right now.

I am reminded of the scene where Lot is escaping from Sodom and is reminded not to look back at the City lest he be damned into a pillar of salt. I am that pillar of salt right now. Friends of mine that have heard this comparison before from me, I apologize for the repetitiveness.

I best keep running, not worrying.

i thought i saw a ghost

Are my teeth okay? Are my teeth okay? They're not loose are they? Are they falling out?

Tears were a stream, she was trying to breathe again. Her teeth were fine, but she must have fallen hard on her face. Blood trickled through the dry lips' cracks. her wispy hair engulfed the frail frame. I could tell she was young, but a twisted pain brought upon a fearful old looking face. How badly had she fallen off her bike?

She was kind of stupid, wearing a long flowing skirt while riding a bike over a bridge. Kevin, Brenden, a stranger and I crouched around her, feeding her water and slowly righting her up after her crash. We had come upon her fallen, looking dead in the middle of the bridge. The sun hovering at center, wind howling. Her voice quivered and her eyes were glossed but seeking and trembling for our help. Her body was a crumple, even sitting up on the red fencing. The blood was not flowing hard now.

Do you want us to call an ambulance? No? We must have asked that fifty times or more.

She was not American, possibly French? It is expensive to get an ambulance and it is expensive to go into the emergency room when you have no health care. It was understood. We called her boyfriend, her co-workers and friends. We waited. She cried.

I have to be at work right now, she stifled. Eventually her boss, a friend got to her first.

Is she okay? Thank you so much for taking care of her. Oh god. Look at you.

We had been in a rush to get to an event and now she seemed safe. Though even as I left, I thought to myself: concussion. Had we just let her walk off with a cracked skull, soon to die mid stride. Should we have trusted the conventional way of throwing her into the leeching hands of a hospital? We did the best we could, I thought, yeah. Later her boyfriend called my phone again. Is she safe? I couldn't find her on the bridge. Yeah buddy, she's okay. I hope, I muttered to myself.

Two days ago I was blessed with another encounter with the woman. Truly it was breath taking. I saw a woman that I thought I knew, crossing the road with her young daughter. Where do I remember her from? She seems so familiar. It was cold now, months since we had taken care of that woman on the bridge.

The memory surged back as soon as I had passed her, turned the corner, out of sight. Part of me wanted to jet back and find her and tell her: I'm so glad to see you are okay. But then, it was not necessary. Life was still pulsing for her, and she was still alive, still walking, still a mother. And I was thankful.

Human Adult Band has been a creative vehicle for Trevor Pennsylvania since October 2002 and has featured a revolving door of members from experimental, rock and noise acts, Buckets and Batteries, Gorgot and Magnet City Kids. The Adult Band formed in New Brunswick, NJ as a two piece with members, Digget on drums and Trevor P.A. on bass and vocals. Drummer, Digget was quickly replaced by Blaine and the band began to include additional members to fill out the sound. The new additions included, at times, Michael Dooling on percussion, Jake Annodide on modified guitars and circuit bent keyboards and Mike Hayden on additional keyboards and mixing board. Drummer, Chaz Wetlands, replaced Blaine on drums for a couple of gigs and an east coast tour. After a year of gigging and touring, the band moved to Philadelphia and Trevor P.A. stayed in New Brunswick. At this time the band's Wantnaut/Wastenaut demo, featuring live tracks and home-studio tracks, was released. Soon after the release, Wantnaut/Wastenaut reached the top 40 at NYC's Free103point9, a terribly hip noise and experimental music radio station. Blaine rejoined the Adult Band to work on new material. Shortly after Trevor P.A. decided to regroup the Adult Band in New Brunswick with new members, Mike McCoskey on guitar, Dana on tambourine, Andrei on feedback mixer and microphone and King Darves on drums, the later two from the New Brunswick noise band, Gorgot. The Adult Band can currently be found playing basement shows, loft parties and the Easton Ave. fast food circuit in New Brunswick, NJ . Added note (1.14.08): My grandfather died this past year; he was my dad's dad. He was on a leisure drive through the winding roads and degrading farmlands of rural Maryland, when he had the inkling to turn the car back home, park it outside the apartment complex, and then pass on due to a heart attack at 95 years old. He lived a good life, played it frugal, lived it a classy way, stayed healthy; in his early years he was apparently chauvinistic but I knew him as a kindly man in his old age. Drank liquor sparingly, and never smoked. He was the last of my grandparents (on both sides of the family). I have never seen a person die, but his 'end story' still reverberates with me strongly. To my medical father, his dad's death had been on the horizon ever since Grandpa had neared 90 years old. It just gets to a certain point were life becomes incredibly fragile. For the eulogy, not too much was lamented and the atmosphere was not too sad, as my dad and my uncle did not have the fondest memories of their dad, they were mostly stories about his love for cars and dogs. However, I later found that he was a small-town legend; remembered by his friends for climbing trees at parties on Staten Island in his youth. He was thus dubbed the local 'Tarzan'.

I found this of interest, within Grandpa's manner of the straight arrow and being a 'well-oiled-machine', he also let loose a bit. Most people tend to do so at some point in their life. Everyone gets old but you can tell those who still have a beat of youth left in their 'step'.

this has been my room in another family's home for the past five and a half months. i just moved out this week! its a funny story!

Kate's birthday... held at her brother Andrew (Lifers) basement.

I had some good meals.

One year ago (exactly), the Womb Bomb band (and Andrew, VHS Porn, Steve Viegas, etc.) played Kate's birthday party at her parents basement. Mike on drums, and the spirit of a shakey dance-soul-man destroyed the place; he and Jen (on keyboard) were bundled in hazard/radiation body clothes; Dave played a happy guitar; I constantly fucked up his amplifier as I turned the lights/electricity on and off trying to make a light show. Kate's mom made deep fried assorted foods. All the kids were farting and stinking up the basement and it was kind of funny to not care with this exchange of gas over cigarette smoke. I also tried to get this kid to play a metallica song with me, as all he knew was metallica songs, so he said - all he knew was 'one', but I don't think he could play it. Before I caught what was happening, he was dedicating the song to a dead family member, to an audience that was more interested in talking about their high school highs. It was sad and awkward all over the place.
